Tootal goes sustainable

Tootal Fabrics (Holland) B.V. is introducing a sustainable fabric collection, which we consider as a necessary step to contribute to a more sustainable approach in our industry and to the ecological awareness of the customers and consumers.

Reducing microfibers, which are polluting the world’s oceans or using more materials with less environmental impact, sustainability is front and centre in the textile- and apparel industry.

Our approach to go sustainable

The production and manufacturing of textile is a water and chemical intensive process, which has a negative impact on our planet.
The world turns a blind eye towards the textile industry being one of the biggest polluters. Tootal Fabrics (Holland) B.V. takes responsibility by offering a sustainable fabric collection to help reducing this impact.

We made first steps towards sustainability some years ago by ensuring that our entire fabric collection is Oekotex certified and covers Reach regulations and is therefore free of harmful chemicals.

We are certified by and therefore comply with the worldwide recognized standards such as: BCI, GOTS, GRS, OCS and other certification institutions.

Our whole supply chain is monitored by these organisations to ensure the highest standards are kept year after year by Tootal Fabrics (Holland) B.V..

At present we offer the following eco-friendly and sustainable fabrics: tencel, bamboo, organic cotton, and recycled polyester which are now in our collection.

What is better cotton (BCI)?

Tootal Fabrics (Holland) B.V. is a proud member of the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI). This initiative improves cotton farming globally, supports worker’s wages and reduces chemical treatments. As a member we contribute and support cotton BCI certified farmers worldwide, therefore we are able to purchase raw material from these farmers, which have a lower environmental impact than non-BCI certified farmers. With more than 1.5 million licenced farmers from 22 countries on five continents, the BCI initiative has become a worldwide success.

As a member of BCI we are able to provide the BCI credits (BCCU). Customers can purchase larger volumes as a forward order, which we can keep in stock for call-off.

Our sustainable fabric collection

Organic Cotton

Organic cotton is produced and certified to agricultural standards. This means that every step in production from seed to fabric is sustainable by using organic growth methods and a reduction of the use of toxic and persistent pesticides and fertilizers.
We recently added organic cotton fabrics to our collection.

We recently became a Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) supplier. This allows us to provide non-genetically modified raw material, produced without the use of any synthetic agricultural chemicals such as fertilizers or pesticides. The fabrics we offer with GOTS certificate with composition 100% cotton and 97% cotton / 3% stretch contain more than 70% organic cotton are part of our standard collection.

Certified by Control Union:

Global Recycled Standard (GRS) is a standard that indicates that the fabric has at least one material part consisting of more than 50% of recycled material. In our case it is about recycled polyester. The fabrics we offer with a GRS or other certificate, based on a polyester rich blend, come in several colours.

Certified by Control Union:

Organic Content Standard (OCS) means that 5 - 100 percent of the fabric is made of bio-material. Besides the OCS certification for organic blends, there is also the OCS Organic 100. This relies on third-party verification to confirm whether a final product contains the accurate amount of a given organically grown material. We offer, based on this standard fabrics, several colours. Once the final garment is produced, the respective customer has to apply for this certificate.

Eco-friendly Fabrics

We currently stock the following range of fabrics with ecofriendly materials: Tencel (Lyocell) - Bamboo - Viscose - Linen. Each of these natural fibres has its own ecofriendly characteristics. In particular the cellulose fibres of lyocell, bamboo and viscose feels soft on the skin.

Tencel from Lenzing Fibres

Tencel is a cellulose fibre, which is made by dissolving wood pulp and using a special drying process called spinning. Tencel has good absorption characteristics and is 50% more absorbent than cotton. The fibres are more breathable and less susceptible to bacteria growth. These fabrics are perfect for activewear or day to day comfort. Tencel is part of our standard collection and comes in three different variations.

Bamboo fabrics are made from Bamboo plants. Bamboo is fast growing, strong and requires less water than the production of cotton for example. It is truly an amazing product similar to Tencel and can be found in our standard collection. This fabric is available in several colours.

Viscose (also called Rayon) is made of a semi-synthetic fibre and made from wood pulp, a cellulose-based raw material from fast growing trees such as eucalyptus. Our Viscose collection is available in the following colours: white, ecru, pink, purple, grey, beige, red, dark blue, light blue and black. We can also create digitally printed designs on these Viscose fabrics by our European digital print source.

Linen textiles are made from flax plants. The fibres are very strong, corrugating and it dries faster than cotton. Linen is valued for its coolness in hot and humid weather. Garments made of Linen fabrics are very durable and longlasting when treated correctly. In our standard collection you will find 100% Linen and a Linen/Cotton blend in plain colours and yarn dyed designs.
